FBYC 2013 Jr. Sailing School Programs

Programs are delivered by CYA-certified instructors. Requirements for all levels include:

• Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Process must be signed by the student and a parent.

• Students must wear: footwear, sunglasses, sunscreen and a properly-fitted, Personal Floatation Device (PFD) with emergency whistle – this is not provided by the sailing school. Stay hydrated!

• Student must be able to swim. Indicate swimming ability/level on the registration form.

Introduction to Boating and Learn to Sail (LTS) Program

Two weeks of on-shore and on-water activities. For children 7- 9 years old with little or no sailing experience. No tests, no pressure. This is a great way to start learning about boating early, with others who may become lifelong friends! Students learn to sail in Optimist (OPTI) dinghies. Pre-requisites:
• 6 years old before the session and able to swim

Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) CANSail  I & II Programs – was White Sail 1, 2 & 3

Two week sessions linked together into a two-step program, each earning a Sail Canada certification. The program develops basic sailing skills and knowledge, on and off the water. Students will learn in Optimists or 420s. Most sailors can complete a level in a single 2-week session. Prerequisites:
• Minimum of 7 years old before the session; OR,
• Student has completed LTS and has ability

Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) CANSail  III & IV Programs – was Bronze 3 & 4

Four week sessions linked together into a two-step program, with each step earning a CYA sailing certification. The program develops advanced sailing skills and introduces sailors to the excitement of the race course. We also cover basic boat construction and maintenance concepts, including practical skills.

Graduates of the CANSail IV program are fully competent sailors, with all related safety and seamanship know-how. Prerequisites:
• Must have completed earlier CANSail programs

Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) CANSail  V & VI Programs – was Silver & Gold

High-performance sailing and dingy racing are the focus of these 8-week programs, with emphasis on long-term athlete development (LTAD) in the areas of fitness, sail training, nutrition and sportsmanship. Students race at the local level, trying to place. If successful, students are expected to enter provincial and national regattas.

These programs can be completed in parallel with the FBYC Race Team but additional fees and tests are required. Sail Canada/OSA observers and examiners co-ordinate with FBYC activities to evaluate levels.

Participants in this level are encouraged to have their own race-ready Optimist or Laser (full rig or radial). The Race Coach can assign an FBYC-owned boat to a registered sailor, subject to a signed agreement and special damage deposit by a parent. To ensure the boat will be perfectly matched to the sailor, it is recommended that each student own straps, lines & sails.

DISCLAIMER:  At the sole discretion of the Rear Commodore, Jr. Sail, FBYC reserves the right not to offer any program (or to field a race team) due to insufficient number of students, parent volunteers or suitable instructors. This is not subject to appeal.
