Update on Bluffers Park Dredging
This is the
latest information as of June 21, 2010
The basin channel dredging is now completed.
The channel is approximately 30 meters wide, (slightly under 100') and
will be a "dog leg" or "hockey stick" in shape. (See
diagram in Downloads Section.) The depth in the channel is about 2.5
meters below datum. At today's water levels, this means about 3 meters of
depth.
To ensure safe passage for all boaters, we would ask
that you observe the following;
- Shallow
draft boats and sailing dinghies are asked to give way in the marked
channel, and the approaches to the channel, to larger vessels with limited
room to manoeuvre. As required in the 'rules of the road', in a
confined channel, boats under sail do not have the right of way
over vessels under power.
- Sailboats
with motors are asked to use their motors for propulsion in the channel.
- All
vessels should observe a speed of 5 knots in the channel while maintaining
a safe distance between boats.
- There
are currently Red/Green markers in the channel which were left there by
the dredging crew. Traditionally, this channel has been unmarked and
investigations are underway to determine if it should be marked with
official marker buoys in the future. Should water levels drop
further this season, the depth in the channel will be reduced, and we
should expect additional silting which will further reduce the depth and
the room for larger, deep draft vessels to manoeuvre.
